“Forever Chemicals” May Promote Cancer Migration (Metastasis)
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of chemicals associated with a growing list of toxic effects and sometimes called “forever chemicals” due to their persistence in the environment and human body. Now, a new study has found that they may promote the migration of cancer cells to new areas.
PFAS are frequently present in drinking water, indoor dust, and coatings and have even been detected in the blood of people living in sub-Arctic Indigenous communities. No level of them in the body is considered safe, and two PFAS – PFOA and PFOS – were recently declared to be potentially carcinogenic.
The study was conducted in a lab and specifically focused on the effects of PFOA and PFOS on colorectal cancer cells. After exposure to these two specific PFAS, the cancer cells showed increased motility and metabolic changes associated with cancer metastasis.
PFAS are widespread, but firefighters and those living near airports, military bases, landfills, and wastewater treatment plants often have greater exposure. In everyday life, PFAS are commonly present in products and clothing that are water- or stain-resistant and/or nonstick.
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome More Common Than Thought, 90% of Cases Undiagnosed
The number of people living with chronic fatigue syndrome in the U.S. may be as many as 4.3 million, which is far higher than previous estimates of 836,000 to 2.5 million people, a new survey has found. In addition, about 90% of chronic fatigue cases may still be undiagnosed.
Chronic fatigue syndrome – technically known as myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) – is generally characterized as at least 6 months of profound tiredness that often worsens with activity and does not improve with rest. Other symptoms can include sleep abnormalities and pain.
The survey was conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and included 57,133 American adults. Approximately 1.3% of respondents reported a ME/CFS diagnosis with women more likely to have chronic fatigue than men.
If these survey results hold true for the general population, ME/CFS is much more prevalent than previously thought. The reason for the rise in chronic fatigue cases is unknown, and treatment usually consists of managing symptoms, including through lifestyle changes and psychological support. Exposure Therapy Could Help People Overcome Multiple Fears
Many people suffer from a specific type of fear or phobia with spiders and heights being two of the most common aversions. Those who want to overcome their fear can turn to exposure therapy – confronting fear-inducing situations under expert supervision – which may be uncomfortable but has a track record of success. Interestingly, a recent study even found that exposure therapy for spiders also reduced the fear of heights in participants, despite the fact that heights were not involved in the therapy sessions. Microplastic Particles Found to Cross Into Placentas
Microplastics are tiny particles that form when larger plastics break down. They range in size from 5 mm to 1 micrometer (a millionth of a meter) and have quickly become a pollutant of concern in the environment and the human body. Some new research has alarmingly found that microplastics can even cross the gut and enter the placenta during pregnancy. This appears to be occurring more frequently with microplastics found in 6 out of 10 placentas in 2006 and 10 out of 10 in 2021. (More)
Certain Antipsychotics Are Linked to Heart Rhythm Disorders
Quetiapine and haloperidol are antipsychotic drugs used for mental health disorders like schizophrenia and psychosis. A recent study has connected both of them to an increased risk of ventricular arrhythmias, while antipsychotics in general are associated with as much as a two-fold risk of sudden cardiac death. Unfortunately, there are currently no safer alternatives available, but the study authors advise special caution with patients at higher risk for heart problems. (More)

Keratin is a key protein that gives form to your hair, nails, and the outer layer of your skin. It helps to provide a protective layer against the outside environment and also helps with wound healing. Keratin is so strong that it will not dissolve in diluted acids, solvents, alkalines, or water.
